Autism Assessment Process

Referral

A concern about a child's development is identified by a parent, teacher, physician, or other professional, leading to a recommendation for a comprehensive evaluation.

Parent Consent

Parents provide written permission for professionals to conduct an autism evaluation and collect assessment information.

Evaluation Planning

The multidisciplinary team determines which assessments, observations, and specialists are needed to evaluate the child's strengths and areas of need.

Professionals use standardized tests, interviews, developmental histories, and other assessment tools to gather information about the child's development and behavior.

Observation

The child is observed in natural settings, such as home, school, or the community, to understand communication, social interaction, behavior, and daily functioning.

Team Meeting

Parents and the multidisciplinary team review all assessment results, discuss findings, and determine whether the child meets the criteria for autism.

Eligibility

The team determines whether the child qualifies for an autism diagnosis (DSM-5) and/or special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Educational Planning

If eligible, the team develops an individualized plan, such as an Individualized Education Program (IEP), with goals, services, accommodations, and supports to meet the child's unique needs.
